COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The aim of this course is to help students broaden their understanding of the field of gender and development. We will begin with an overview of the formation of Gender and Development as a field of research and practice. We will examine gender and development issues by drawing on insights offered by important theoretical approaches, including the Capabilities Approach, human development, and human security. Topics covered include capabilities & human security, globalization & precarity, migration, conflict, displacement, structural violence, peacekeeping & peacebuilding, identities, rights and empowerment. Students will relate theoretical issues to concrete case studies in order to enhance their appreciation of important global commonalities and regional differences that characterize the gendered nature of development processes.

  2. Presentation 1 (15%)
  3. Presentation 2 (15%)
  4. Research Essay Proposal (20%)
  5. Research Essay (30%)
