What does hip-hop culture tell us about society? Race? Gender? Power? Blackness? SOC*4740: Sociology of Hip-hop offers a critical exploration and sociological analysis of hip-hop and its culture(s), its historical roots, and intradiasporic connections. Through an examination of key moments, eras, artists, and trends in hip-hop culture, we will explore various critiques of the culture in addition to grappling with epistemological and ontological questions in areas such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, power, and African diasporas.

Please be advised that this draft outline provides a preliminary framework of the course and is subject to change upon syllabus finalization. Students will be provided with a complete and updated course syllabus on the first day of classes via CourseLink.
