The Sociology of Psychedelic Culture, Science and Therapy

Abstract: The 21st-century “psychedelic renaissance” has transformed cultures around science, medicine, and therapeutics, yet sociology remains underrepresented despite its long history of studying drug use and experiences. This talk highlights how sociological theories—from Becker’s social learning to Durkheim’s collective effervescence and Collins’s interaction ritual chains—can deepen understanding of psychedelic science, culture, and medicine by situating psychedelic consciousness within social and cultural contexts.

Bio: Dr. Jarrett Robert Rose is a sociologist and assistant professor at the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute. His research applies a sociological lens to the cultural, scientific, and therapeutic aspects of psychedelics, examining how socialization, connection, and psychedelic cultures shape healing, bonding, and trauma recovery. He has published in Sociology of Health & Illness, Social Science & Medicine, Sociology Compass, and the Journal of Psychedelic Studies, contributing to interdisciplinary debates on medicine, culture, and society.
