e) Course Description Participants examine ways of understanding homicide through a sociological lens. We will attend to definitions, extent, statistics, types, patterns, social, cultural, political and economic context and impacts, theories and responses to homicide. We will examine key criminological and sociological empirical research examining various types of homicide, including,

• individual, multiple, mass and serial homicide,

• filicide, parricide, familicide,

• femicide, feminicide,

• genocide,

• corporate.

We will also focus on various aspects of intervention, punishment and prevention initiatives.

Note: This course takes a distinctive approach to learning and assessment with a rhythmic weekly pace of skill and confidence-building. Course requirements include actively and regularly participating in readings, on-line discussions, and quizzes for each unit (rather than large written assignments and tests). Conscientious daily time-management and successful maintenance of the weekly pace is a course learning objective (that will yield high rewards in both learning and grades in this course and beyond).
