BRIEF COURSE OUTLINE

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the major areas of sociological analysis with an emphasis on Canadian society and Canadian social problems. The course introduces you to the theoretical foundations of sociology and the various research methodologies that sociologists use to conduct research on the social world.  It is intended that the course fosters, in you, the student, a critical understanding of the social behaviors of individuals and groups as they occur in the societal context.

In this introductory course you will be given an opportunity to develop your skills in social scientific inquiry. Emphasis will be placed on understanding key concepts, definitions, ideas, theoretical perspectives, and research methods within the discipline of sociology. This course will help you to:

  • use your sociological imagination
  • understand the meanings and applications of various sociological concepts
  • look beyond and critically analyze what we often see as common-sense understandings of social events and relationships in order to recognize how social forces influence and shape the choices we make, our beliefs, and broad patterns of behaviour across societies.

Please be advised that you should consult the Course Outline for details on course content, readings, quiz information, assignment, and due dates.
